US Army Corps of Engineers - Alaska DivisionFt. Wainwright Central Heating and Power Plant Emissions Reduction Project![]() Ft. Wainwright, Alaska Ft. Wainwright's Central Heating and Power Plant is served by six coal-fired boilers, and has an electric generation capacity of 22 megawatts. To bring the plant into regulatory compliance while operating at increased efficiency and capacity, the plant was retrofitted with fabric filtration (baghouse) collectors. PDC Harris provided the detailed design documents for the ~$20 million project, including the building housing the 30 fabric filtration modules. 11th Air Force Composite Medical Facility, Central Heating PlantScope of work included two 600 HP backup steam boilers, three 850 kW emergency generators, and three 25,000 gallon self diked above grade fuel oil storage tanks. An energy source study involved the simulation of the effect of the new hospital electrical and steam demands onto the operational efficiencies of the two military power plants adjacent to the facility. In addition to the power plant, alternative energy for the nearest local utility was also analyzed. Energy Recovery Systems, Central Heat and Power PlantScope of supply included design and construction documents for implementing energy recovery including a flue-gas heat recovery system fitted onto existing boiler exhaust stacks. The new lighting system incorporated new inverters and connections to maintain the locations and operations of the existing "black start" emergency lighting system. Ft. Richardson Boiler Feedwater Pump UpgradeFt. Richardson, Alaska Design of modifications to the Central Heating and Power, including the removal and replacement of four existing pumps with drive motors, controls, instrumentation and accessories, with four electric driven boiler feedwater pump units and the identification, removal and abatement of hazardous materials. Also included were new feeders to a new arrangement of variable speed drives for the new pumps and interface to the plant controls system. |
